# dMeet Chats

Want to message someone directly without starting a call? **dMeet now has private, encrypted one-on-one chats** — a simple way to stay in touch between meetings.

### How chats work

dMeet chats work a little differently from what you might be used to — and it's by design.

{% hint style="info" icon="shield-keyhole" %}
Instead of syncing your full message history to the cloud, **your chat history is stored locally, right on your device**. That means your conversations stay with you, not on some server somewhere. No cloud backups to worry about, no central database holding onto your private messages — just you and the person you're talking to.
{% endhint %}

It's a small trade-off for real peace of mind: your chats are yours, and they stay that way.

### Where new chats show up

To check your messages, open the **Chats** section in the top menu.

When someone messages you for the first time, dMeet uses a bit of context to figure out where the conversation should land:

* If you've never crossed paths before — no shared meetings, no calls, not in each other's Favorites — their message goes to **Requests**, a separate space for messages from people you haven't connected with yet
* If you've met before (a shared meeting, a call, or they're in your Favorites), the chat appears directly in your **main chat list**
* If you have an **active** [**paid plan**](/plans-and-billing/plans-and-pricing.md), your messages go straight to the recipient's main chat list too — even if you've never crossed paths before
*

```
### What you can do in a chat
* **Send messages** — text only for now, images aren't supported yet
* **Edit** your own messages — within **24 hours** of sending
* **Delete** a message, or delete the entire chat
{% hint style="info" icon="user-shield" %}
Replying to a specific message isn't available in chats — it's a deliberate choice, since chat content isn't accessible to anyone outside the conversation, including the dMeet team.
{% endhint %}
### Connections & Notes
#### Connections
Wondering if you've met someone before they message you? Open their profile and check **Connections** — *it shows how many times you've crossed paths in meetings or calls, along with your two most recent interactions.* It's a quick way to recognize someone before diving into a conversation with them.
Connections shows up on every profile, not just inside chats.
#### Notes
Want to remember a quick detail about someone? Add a private **Note** to their profile — up to **160 characters**. Only you can see it — the other person has no idea it's there.
Your notes are saved against that person's profile and visible from **any device** you're logged into. You'll find them both inside a chat and on your [contacts list](/lets-get-started/calls-and-meetings-overview.md).
